Professional Training & Experience

Haltwhistle Film Project has been running for 18 years.  We have created many projects from scratch as well as having run projects across most key sectors:  education; health; criminal justice; creative industries; local authorities.

Throughout our professional lives we have worked with all ages (3 to 103 years old) and abilities, and geographically from West Cumbria to South Shields and the Borders to Teeside.

Approach to the work/professional ethos:

Our ethos is to put the people we are working with at the centre of creative decision-making.  We are interested in what people are able to do, not their limitations.  We work as a small group of filmmakers and animators, and only take on people, other freelancers, who share our ethos at a practical level.

We offer everything from short workshops to long-term projects integrated into an organisation’s wider aims.  We have also run training across the ability spectrum in all aspects of pre and post-production in film and animation..

Project Example 1

FilmAble is a film production company run by and for people with learning disabilities.  We set it up within Haltwhistle Film Project.  It arose out of a need to provide a sustained level of opportunities and training which were not available elsewhere.  The team (aged 21 to 65yrs-old) offers a full range of roles from pre to post production, running workshops in film and animation, through to screenings.   FilmAble has undertaken several commissions from documentaries to animated theatre backdrops. See some clips at http://filmable.org.uk/FilmAble has three strands:  Making films and animations; training to be trainers; creating a sustainable business.

Project Example 2

Give Us A Break.  We produced a film over several months, for Cumbria County Council, working with Mayfield SEN Physical and Sensory Specialist School in Whitehaven, aimed at promoting choice in what used to be called respite care, amongst families and children. Working with other artists, we worked with every child in the school to establish a skilled crew to make the film with.  The final screening was held at Theatre by the Lake in Keswick and also featured a live performance.  We continue to work with Mayfield on other projects two years on.
