History & Overview
Prism Arts exists to support and enable excluded groups in Cumbria to realise their creative potential and celebrate their experience through active participation in and exploration of the arts.
Since its inception in 1987, Prism Arts has initiated hundreds of projects throughout Cumbria working with a wide range of groups including disabled people, older people and those with mental-health difficulties. The charity was started by five artists who offered workshops in dance, drama, music and visual arts to day centres, schools, hospitals, arts centres and on play schemes.
In 1990 Prism Arts became a partnership of three and extended its remit to youth work and return to work schemes. It became a charitable trust in 1992 working along the same lines as it does today. It has delivered over 350 projects in Cumbria.
Prism Arts delivers high quality creative experiences to large numbers of people in Cumbria. Projects are run by experienced and well qualified arts practitioners and with the support of volunteers.
In November 2006, Prism Arts was voted National winner of the Rural Arts Award at Dada Fest 06.
