Studio Theatre Carlisle

Dragon from The Magical Morphers and the Dream Vortex by Prism Arts Studio Theatre: weekly theatre and arts workshops for young people and adults with learning disability in Carlisle, Cumbria

N is a young man on the Autistic spectrum, and a member of our theatre company for adults with learning disabilities.

He first came to Prism Arts in September 2013, in turbulent circumstances: not only had he just moved to Cumbria from the midlands, but he was living with his sister and her partner following his mother’s death.

N struggled to make social relationships with others, and often sat outside of the group. Although he seemed to enjoy drawing, and came up with ideas for the performance, he found it difficult to engage with making things.

However, as we started the rehearsal period, we noticed N’s passions starting to emerge. Because Prism Arts works in a focussed, participant-centred way, our professional artists were able to nurture this passion.

We involved N more in the performance side of the work, moving him from the Visual Art group to the Performance group, where he grew much happier.

N is now one of Prism Arts’ principle performers. This year, he took a lead role in the production that he helped to create: The Magical Morphers and the Dream Vortex. He has performed at Mintfest International Festival of Street Performance, Victoria Infants School, and at Florence Mine Arts Centre as part of the National Family Arts Festival.

His sister has reported that he is always keen to get out of bed when he is due to come to Prism Arts. Since joining our theatre programme, he has developed a lot of confidence, has become more vocal, and is fully integrated with the rest of the group.
