No Ordinary Commission: C-Art Open Studio’s 2016

Local students win £1000 bursary to exhibit at C-Art

For two weeks in September, the Carlisle Business Interaction Centre (CBIC), home of Prism Arts, will be transformed into a pop up gallery as part of C-Art Open Studios (10th – 25th September, 2016).

Prism Arts C-Art Exhibition

This year, Prism Arts and the University of Cumbria have worked in partnership to create 2 bursary opportunities for fine art and illustration students: one from Prism Arts to work alongside participants of Studio Arts, and one from the University of Cumbria to produce a piece of work for the three storey stairwell in the CBIC.

Katie Lock and Maddy Mould, both recent graduates of the University of Cumbria’s BA (Hons) in Illustration, are in receipt of the two bursaries. Katie and Maddy worked alongside Amber, a Studio Arts participant, and used her personal experiences and interests to produce paper cut patterns. Starting with simple paper cut shapes they worked to create patterns inspired by mid-century illustration. The designs were then screen printed at the University of Cumbria.

Katie Lock commented “Working with Amber has been a real mind opening experience for both of us when it comes to image making. We encountered differences in the way we all work, these differences brought us to some really interesting designs”

Prism Arts are delighted to be employing University of Cumbria graduate Katie from September as a Support Artist for their Studio Arts group, which runs for 36 weeks per academic year. Catherine Coulthard, Director of Prism Arts said “We are committed to supporting arts graduates into paid employment, Katie will become an important member of our artist team”.

3. No Ordinary Safari Tigers

‘No Ordinary Safari’ will be exhibited in Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery Gardens, and invite visitors to discover the variety of work on display in the CBIC, which will also include current students work, and work from Prism Arts projects and workshops across the county, including work by the professional artists who lead the workshops. New and recent work by University of Cumbria graduates and alumni will be on display during the C-Art exhibition, and in the Business Interaction Centre throughout the coming year. The stairwell installation will be in place until summer 2017.

The Prism Arts and University of Cumbria C-Art exhibition will be open to the public from 10th September – 25th September, 9am – 5pm weekdays and 11am – 4pm at weekends.
